A Guide to Changing Your Golf Cart's Headlights
With the wide variety of ways that people are using golf carts these days, having headlights has gone from optional to almost a necessity. Headlights help you to see and be seen in dim or dark driving conditions, whether you’re playing a long round of golf or using your cart as a low-speed vehicle in the neighborhood. Of course, headlights also burn out over time, and it can be a pain to get your cart to a repair shop to have them replaced when it seems like such an easy fix to do at home.
Revel 42 of Wilmington is your North Carolina golf cart dealer, serving the cities of Carolina Beach and Leland. Here’s our guide to replacing the headlights on your golf cart.
Know Your Cart’s Light Style
The main golf cart manufacturers all have similar headlight setups on their golf carts, although some models may have two separate lights while others have a single light bar. It’s important to understand your particular cart’s style of lights so you can replace them correctly.
New Vs. Used Bulbs
You may be tempted to save money and more easily acquire parts that match your golf cart’s specific make and model by purchasing used bulbs. However, used bulbs are likely to have been, well, used before, so they probably won’t last as long and older bulbs tend to be dimmer. It’s best to purchase new light bulbs whenever possible.
Replacing the Bulb
First, you need to remove the lens cover on the bulb using your fingers to unclip or prise it off (if it’s a light bar cover that snaps on) or a screwdriver to remove the screws holding it on (for individual headlights). Place the cover on a soft surface out of the way and put the screws in it, if there are any.
Next, pull out or unscrew the bulb, depending on the type it is. If a gentle pull doesn’t get the light out, then you likely need to unscrew it a little. Wearing gloves can help you to get the best grip on the bulb possible while also protecting your hands in case the bulb shatters. Also, gloves help to protect the bulb from developing residue from the oil on your hands, specifically on the electrical contact.
Pick up the new bulb and screw or push it gently into the socket, then turn on your cart to switch on the lights so you can tell if they work. Replace the covers as you removed them.
