While many people opt to use golf carts for their original purpose (transportation on golf courses), there has been an increase in recent years of golf cart usage on public roads and in residential areas. These street-legal golf carts have typically been altered in some way to make them appropriate for use on certain roads, but what are the road rules that golf cart drivers must follow? Read on to find out.

Following the Rules of the Road

In short, golf cart drivers do need to adhere to the traffic laws and regulations stipulated by local legislation. If you’re driving your golf cart on a public road, you must use your turn signals and make maneuvers with care. You will be helping other drivers out by being a responsible driver and following the same rules that cars and trucks do.

Speed Concerns

Unmodified golf carts can’t usually reach speeds higher than 20 miles per hour, which means they can’t be driven on high-speed roads. However, you’ll also need to exercise caution on slower roads, since other vehicles may be traveling anywhere from five to fifteen miles faster than your vehicle. In some cases, you may need to stick to very slow roads and keep your speed lower than the posted limit.
