If you own an electric golf cart, then you’re probably aware that its engine is powered using a battery instead of a tank full of gasoline. While you don’t have to deal with messy oil changes or other complicated gas upkeep with an electric golf cart, you do need to do everything you can to ensure that your cart’s battery life lasts as long as possible and that your battery doesn’t malfunction due to neglect.

Revel 42 of Wilmington is your North Carolina electric golf cart dealer. Follow these golf cart battery maintenance tips to ensure that your golf cart’s battery is always ready to go and in peak condition.

Charging Up

Always keep your golf cart’s battery fully charged when you’re not using the cart. This ensures that the battery doesn’t die due to lack of usage and it also keeps your golf cart ready to go whenever you want it. Charge batteries in a well-ventilated space with a functional charger and never smoke while charging your battery. Do not charge your battery if it’s corroded.

If you notice that your battery loses charge, you can unplug the charger and plug it in again to avoid this since the charger itself can’t detect a loss of charge. When fully charged up, your battery will usually obtain anywhere from 15 to 20 miles per charge.

Watering Your Battery

One slightly peculiar thing you need to do when you own an electric golf cart is to keep an eye on your golf cart’s water level. The battery cells have a level about an inch below the top of the cell to show you where the water should be. When adding water to your battery, always use distilled water, since tap water will have trace amounts of chemicals and elements that can harm your battery with extended usage.

Try to check your water level every two months and top it off as needed. This will prevent the battery’s plates from drying out, which can cause the battery to either die completely or to overheat and potentially catch fire!

Cleaning Your Terminals

The terminal connections on your battery should be cleaned whenever you notice corrosion building up. Make sure the cart is off before removing the battery to clean it. A little bit of water and baking soda made into a paste and applied to a toothbrush can be used to scrub the battery terminals. Rinse with water and then apply a battery terminal protectant spray to prevent further corrosive build-up.
