E-Bike Buying Guide
Many folks enjoy the freedom and convenience of riding a bicycle, but sometimes, it would be better if your bike could give you a little help. This is why electric bikes, also known as “e-bikes,” have become so popular in recent years. These bikes are affordable and practical and tend to be more useful for commuters who may not want to deal with the physical exertion required to ride a standard bike. Here is some background information on electric bikes to help you decide if they’re the mode of transport for you.
Pedal Assist
A pedal assist system makes use of a motor to add power to the rider as they pedal, thus increasing the speed of the e-bike without the rider having to increase the effort they’re putting in. Some electric bicycles have a set speed at which the pedal-assist system activates, and some can even let you use the pedal-assist without pedaling at all, to make your ride easy and pleasant. Most e-bikes let you set the power level you desire, and a torque sensor will determine the amount of power the engine should provide.
Ebike Motor Types
Electric bikes may have one of three types of motors to propel their pedal-assist systems. Your standard electric bike will have either a hub motor or a mid-drive motor. Hub motors anchor to the front or rear wheel of your e-bike. They are low-maintenance and affordable since they aren’t attached to the bike’s drivetrain. Meanwhile, mid-drive motors cost a little more, but they weigh less and aren’t as large as hub motors. Mid-drive motors drive a crank that can help make it easier to go up inclines.
