Like any other type of vehicle, golf carts need to be cleaned every so often. Not only is a clean golf cart nicer to look at, but it’s more comfortable to ride in and easier to maintain, since any maintenance issues won’t be obscured by dirt and grime. But you can’t just take your golf cart to a car wash for obvious reasons: it’s open to the air and liable to be damaged.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, it’s helpful to park your golf cart on a flat surface with good drainage, preferably in the shade to avoid soap drying too quickly and leaving streaks. Get your supplies together. To clean a golf cart, you’re going to need: 

  • A source of fresh water, generally a garden hose
  • Buckets
  • Car-wash soap or even dish soap
  • Sponges
  • Towels

Clean the Interior

Take the time to remove all your personal items from your golf cart, especially any sensitive electronics or paperwork that shouldn’t get wet. Bag up any trash and organize your items so that only what’s necessary goes back on your golf cart when you’re done cleaning.

Wash & Dry the Body

Spray your cart with your hose to get it wet, then mix some soap and water in a bucket and soak a sponge or washing mitt in it. Start scrubbing your cart from top to bottom and rinse as you go. You’ll need to work your sponge into every nook and cranny you can while avoiding delicate electronics. 

The windshield will need gentle cleaning because it’s probably acrylic or polycarbonate, which are liable to scratch. Use soapy water and a microfiber cloth to gently wipe your windshield down. Give it a good rinse with the hose once you’ve cleaned it. Towel off the cart when you’re done to avoid water spots left by air-drying. 

Wipe Interior

The last step is to wipe down your cart’s interior, paying careful attention to the seats, the cup holders, the console and the dashboard. You can use bleach wipes on the steering wheel and high-touch surfaces to sanitize them.
